The cabinet is surmounted by a prominent arched cresting carved with a radial sunburst or fan motif, displaying a distressed grey-painted finish that reveals hints of the warm wood beneath. History

Small multi-drawer chests of this type were staple utilitarian objects in 19th-century European and American households, used in kitchens for storing spices, herbs, or sewing notions. The carved sunburst or fan motif is a classic vernacular decorative element drawing from Georgian and Queen Anne design traditions, which remained popular in provincial furniture-making well into the early 20th century.
