History
François Coppée (1842–1908) was an influential French poet, playwright, and novelist, dubbed "le poète des humbles" for his empathetic depictions of Parisian working-class life. Following his election to the Académie française in 1884, publisher Alphonse Lemerre issued high-quality, illustrated luxury editions of his collected works. Lemerre was a central figure in French 19th-century publishing, famed for his fine typography and collaborations with premier Parnassian writers and visual artists.
