History
Originating in Southern France and the Pyrenean regions, the gargoulette was traditionally used by vineyard workers and agrarian laborers to carry and cool water through the process of evaporative transpiration. The dual handle design and raised spout allowed workers to share fresh water hygienically without touching the main mouth of the vessel. Today, these utilitarian folk pottery jars are prized by collectors of European provincial antiques for their sculptural silhouette and organic, tactile surfaces.
