The Story

A fine Victorian blue and white transfer-printed porcelain saucer, attributed to the Staffordshire firm Sampson Bridgwood & Son, decorated in a refined Chinoiserie style. The well of the saucer features a central circular medallion framed by a delicate gilt band, enclosing a finely detailed dragon and phoenix (ho-ho bird) amidst stylized clouds. This central motif is encircled by a wide band of intricate floral scrolls, foliage, and secondary mythical beasts, all rendered in a soft cobalt blue palette and finished with a scalloped, gilt-edged rim.

Those this saucer is unmarked, we're finding all roads lead to Sampson Bridgwood & Son, operating from the Anchor Pottery in Longton, Staffordshir. They were renowned for producing high-quality porcelain and ironstone wares during the 19th century. This piece beautifully demonstrates the enduring Victorian fascination with East Asian design, blending traditional Chinese symbolic motifs—the dragon representing imperial power and the phoenix representing grace and rebirth—with English transfer-printing technology and hand-gilded accents.

History

During the mid-to-late 19th century, English Staffordshire potteries like Sampson Bridgwood & Son capitalized on the popular revival of Chinoiserie and aesthetic movement tastes. Designs featuring dragons, phoenixes, and elaborate floral scrolls allowed middle-class Victorian households to enjoy the exoticism of East Asian art at an accessible price point. Pieces featuring delicate gilding over transfer-printed designs were particularly prized for tea services, representing a sophisticated blend of industrial efficiency and hand-finished luxury.
